DIY: 3 Fun Flower Vase Fillers

When styling a space – whether it be for a party, a dinner or just everyday living – I love to use gorgeous flower arrangements. Flowers have a way of making any room seem that much more special. However, I feel like vases are often afterthoughts.

On an episode of Suite Living, I show three easy and inexpensive DIYs to customize your vases.

After all, if you’re putting an effort into making a beautiful floral arrangement, it would be a shame to ignore the vase!

The key to this project is to use two vases that nest into one another, allowing a gap between the two. This is where you’ll put your vase filler. (Note: the vases don’t have to match. Just be sure that the inside vase isn’t shorter than the outside vase – otherwise, your filler will spill into the inside vase!)

THE PROCESS

Girly and Glam

The first look has an elegant and feminine feel. I achieved this by using little pearl beads (from my local craft store) for the vase filler.

1)     Nest the Vases – Place the smaller of the two vases inside the larger one.

2)     Pour the Filler Carefully pour the beads in between the two vases.

3)    Fill with Water Fill the inside vase with water, taking care to not get any water in the vase filler.

4)     Add the Flowers  Place your flowers of choice into the inside vase. To coordinate with the tones of the pearl beads, I opted to use some beautiful hydrangea for my arrangement.

Nod to Nostalgia

For this next look, I went with something that had a little more of a vintage vibe. A great way to get this look is to use old pennies. If you’re weighed down by your spare pocket change, this is a great way to lighten your load and put it to good use. Or, for us Canucks, it’s great way to use up the pennies that we no longer use in our currency… poor little pennies.

1)     Nest the Vases – Place the smaller of the two vases inside the larger one.

2)     Pour the Filler Carefully pour the coins in between the two vases.

3)    Fill with Water Fill the inside vase with water, taking care to not get any water in the vase filler.

4)     Add the Flowers  Place your flowers of choice into the inside vase. To coordinate with the feel of the coins, I some classic, ivory roses for my arrangement.

Fun and Friendly

For this last look, I mixed it up a bit and went super fun and friendly. Is it wrong that as soon as I decided on a bright and cheerful look, I immediately thought of candy? No matter – but it you’re anything like me, make sure to buy a little extra, otherwise there won’t be enough to use by the time you get home!

1)     Nest the Vases – Place the smaller of the two vases inside the larger one.

2)     Pour the Filler Carefully pour the candy in between the two vases.

3)    Fill with Water Fill the inside vase with water, taking care to not get any water in the vase filler.

4)     Add the Flowers  Place your flowers of choice into the inside vase. To coordinate with youthful feel of the candy, I chose to use some bright and cheery mums for my arrangement.

Or what about some red and green jelly beans for Christmas? How cute would these little candy pacifiers be in an adorable arrangement for a baby shower? The possibilities are endless!
